The broadcast industry is in the process of making the transition to IP-based transport for video, audio and data. This has led to the development of a suite of standards including SMPTE ST 2022 that provide encapsulation of uncompressed SDI within IP packets and SMPTE ST 2110 for live IP production carrying separate streams of video, audio and data packets. With the transition of SDI video to an IP infrastructure new methods of providing synchronization are required. Therefore, the IEEE 1588 and the SMPTE 2059 standards have been developed to provide a method for network synchronization for video within an IP infrastructure. In this presentation, we will discuss this new methodology and the requirements to achieve synchronization with the Precision Time Protocol across the network.
